I do this blog because I Love Music. I grew up with music all different kinds Rock and Roll, Christian in a little Baptist Church, Love Pop, Bluegrass, Country, Classical Rock, Hard Rock, Jazz, AND Blues. We was raised to love music through different aspects of our life. Sometimes it was visiting with my mothers sisters and my Uncle Dallas and cousin Roger, we would have a back yard cookout and they would pull out their guitars and we all would sing.

The Sixties
Today I have been thinking back to a time in our country's history that was dark and bleak.
I was in the fourth grade doing all the things that a grade school girl of our time would be doing.
The girls of that time wore dresses to school and even in winter we was not allow to wear slacks,
this continued until my last year of high school in 1972. The school board past a agreement
we could wear paint suites only. Guess what they cost so much most of us could not
afford them so we wore our dresses . The rule at our school was
your dress length had to come to the middle of the knee cap.
If we wore them any shorter we was sent home to change.
The boys had a certain rules they could not wear long hair
if it grew past their ears they were told to get a hair cut.
Our country saw many changes in 1961 we elected JFK for the 35th president of the USA
he was the youngest president to hold office and the only Catholic.
I remember him today and his speeches my dad was a strong supporter of the Kennedy's.
President Kennedy had many crisis he face as president Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis.
He also was the innovator of our Space Race and the African American Civil Rights Movement.
He also was President when the early stages of Vietnam War started.
I remember that War I guess better than all the rest, because we had friends and family
that had sons that went over there but came back in glass sealed coffins.
The country became divided and there was antiwar protest going all over the country
we even had riots and people going to Canada to evaded the draft.
Then came November 22,1963 in Dallas Texas our beloved President JFK was shot
down, I was in the fourth grade but I remember it very well.
The news came to our schoolhouse and everyone went in to morning that was all the news channels
showed. A very bleak and dark time in our country's history. I can remember my parents were heart broken
as was our whole country. The one memories that stays with me was his wife and children
and his little boy saluting his coffin as it went past them.
I remember the TV showing Vice President Johnston being swore into office on the Air force 1 on the way
back to Washington and the pictures of Jackie Kennedy standing beside President Johnston as he was swore
in wearing the blood stain dress of her husband . This was one strong lady. She won the love
and admiration of this country.
President Johnston had a rough road to hoe he inherited the Vietnam War and all the problems and woes that came
with it. He was also known for his war on poverty. He brought us medicaid and medicare. I think sometimes he
was not give enough credit for what he did do because the wounds that was left from JFK,s assignation
and the Vietnam War. President Johnston wife Ladybird was not give enough credit either. She was for making
our country beautiful and started the wildflowers on the side of the roads we see today. She also was a great advocate
for education.
During this time period our country went through a lot of pain and sorrow of trying to make sense of it all.
TV was our one way of staying in touch with what was going on. We saw the arrest of Oswald and right
before our eyes we saw Jack Ruby shot him on TV while being transferred to a jail cell.
I think to this day the mystery of this will always linger in our minds Why this happen with all kinds
of investigation there are still no true answers for it happening. Our country went through big
changes and as we grew we lost two other important individuals. Bobby Kennedy the presidents brother
and Martian Luther King. Oh yes our TV and their programs came into what was called the golden age
with show like Alfred Hitchcock hour and the Twlight ZONE.There was Walt Disney and Peter Pan,The Wizard of Oz and Cinderella Prime Time TV
was never the same and neither was the radio programs because programs that had drama moved to TV such as Jack Benny and oh yes the
westerns such as Gun Smoke and The Lone Ranger another one that comes to mind is I Love Lucy. One of the things I also remember is the
the TV stations only broadcast 12-18 hour days. One thing I have to mention is the old antennas that we had I know we did good to get
three channels at the best it sure wasn't like it is now you have so many channels no one knows what to really watch.
Now getting back to the Presidents who could ever forget Richard Nixon he served from 1969 to 1974. He was best known for ending the Vietnam War and he
won reelection by a landslide , then came Watergate and all the scandal that came with it. He was in trouble actually being threaten with
impeachment at this time he decided it was better to resign than be impeached so on August 9,1974 Nixon did do just that he resigned.
Oh those sixties they were what made me who I am I live through seeing a wonderful President Assinnated to seeing
one almost be impeached. I live through going from grade school into junior high and into high school these years are always going to
be some of my best memories. Also one of the saddest memories I have of 1968 is when my Percious Dad past away in July of that
year and I had just turned 16. Our family was thankful to had him for the years we were given with him. You see he died at 42, and had work in
the coal mines for 20 years so everyone can truly say I am Proud to be a Coal Miner's Daughter.

Sixties Living
Today I was thinking back to a more simpler time,
when things did not have a price tag on them.
We went to one room school houses and our bathrooms
a toilet outside.
Our playgrounds were empty of swings and slides.
We made our own games up and played together
such as ring around the roses all fall down
hopscotch and marbles.
We were lucky if someone had a ball and bat so we could play a game of baseball.
Most of us walked to school everyday usually a mile or so everyday.
We never had the modern convenience of a bus picking us up at our door.
When our parents said your going to school you went weather you like it or not,
if you was sick and stay home you stay in bed all day.
We learned to read from Ted and Sally reading book,
and our parents had to buy our books for school,
and we were taught education meant something.
We got new clothes twice a year, and when
we came home we changed into old clothing and did not destroy our school clothes.
We learn from a young age what work was about
and did not sassy our parents and tell them no.
If we did not use manners they were taught to us.
We learn that our elders was to be respected at all times
and was taught to shut up and listen when they talked, even if we did not agree.
At night after chores were done we played hide and seek and caught lightening bugs in jars.
Oh what a simple time it was, but it help form roots that grow deep in my mind and help me be who I am today.
Our parents were involved in every part of our life
they cared about what was going on with us, not like some of our
children now days think we are old fogies if we ask about what they are doing.
They should of live back when I did we did not take a step away from home
that Mom and Dad knew what we were doing or were we was going.
My Dad use to say if I know what your doing or were you are then you won't be in any kind of trouble.
Now after raising my children and seeing the world as it is this really makes good sense.
I know from experience if we as parents and grandparents drop the ball
with our children their is no one to pick it up and run with it.I wonder
do we let them go and do what they want because it is easier on us and less time consuming or
just because your child is not what you want them to be do you throw them away like an old towel?
I don 't think so you teach them with love and respect for others even if at times it hurts us to do so,
because threw all of the pain and sorrow we experience, at doing so we hope that this will remain a lesson
for them to carry on to their children to remember just like I have been remembering today.
Do you have memories of the sixties and would like to share and write about with me? You can email me at jc23302@gmail.com I am thinking about writing a series of short stories about this time so our younger generation will be taught and understand what their mothers, fathers, and grandpartents have been through in their life hoping maybe this may open their minds up to a new appreciation of who they are and were they come from some day. Thank You Judith A Turner.
